Golden secures $500,000 for student housing in Presque Isle
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that he has secured $500,000 for renovations and improvement to the Andrews Hall dormitory at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle. The funding is part of the partial 2024 government funding package signed into law on Saturday.
“Maine’s community colleges provide high-quality, affordable education across the state,” Golden said. “Adequate on-campus housing removes barriers to education associated with difficulty finding short-term housing. Housing allows students to focus on their studies, not apartment-hunting, and to be active participants of their college communities. These improvements at Andrews Hall will ensure access to housing is not a barrier for students in Presque Isle.”
“NMCC is grateful for the confidence Congressman Golden is showing by supporting our request for funds for the renovation of Andrews Hall,” said Timothy Crowley, NMCC president. “These funds will assist in upgrading campus housing to support short term training programs that are vital to our workforce and economy.”
NMCC’s dormitory, Andrews Hall, was first built in 1972 to help house the growing number of enrolled students. It also provides housing for University of New England and Quinnipiac University students who come to Aroostook County to complete their clinical rotations and for people seeking on-campus commercial driver’s license training to address the unprecedented workforce shortage in the transportation industry.
The renovations will include all bedrooms, bathrooms, and common areas, as well as installing an elevator and adding new doors and technology upgrades to allow for key card access.
The request on behalf of NMCC was one of 15 awards from Golden’s Community Project Funding (CPF) requests approved as part of the appropriations package. His $26 million in successful CPF requests was the most of any Democrat in Congress.
