Last Week in Maine’s Second District

October 15, 2021

Hi Friend,

Welcome to my weekly rundown, the latest on what I’ve been working on for Mainers in the Second District:

Hearing from Loggers with the Secretary of Labor

I hosted U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh in Fayette and Augusta last Tuesday so he could learn firsthand from Maine loggers and discuss opportunities and challenges facing the logging workforce.

During his visit, we convened a roundtable between Secretary Walsh and Maine loggers to discuss issues including logger recruitment efforts, worker classification issues, and the importance of job training and workforce development for the industry.

Meeting with the Belfast Rotary Club

Meeting with Belfast Rotary Club

It was great to join the Belfast Rotary Club at last week’s meeting. I gave an update on what I’ve been working on for the Second District and answered questions on the latest from Washington, how we can restore a sense of unity in our communities and government, and more.

My Thoughts on the Way Forward for Reconciliation

I don’t believe we have yet matched the lofty rhetoric around the Build Back Better proposal currently being debated in Congress with the durability and quality of the policies being proposed.

The good news is that I believe we still have the ability to get this bill right for our constituents, and we should. I wrote an op-ed in the Portland Press Herald to lay out what I’d like to see addressed with the bill. You can read my op-ed here.

Banning Foreign Payouts to Elected Officials

It’s no secret that foreign corporations use investment opportunities and board positions to gain influence and hold sway over American elected officials and their families. It may not be illegal, but it’s a soft corruption that’s damaging to Congress and the White House.

There’s an easy fix: prohibit government officials and their families from making money from foreign businesses. I introduced a bill to do just that. If you want to get rich with a foreign company, don’t go into public service.

As always, I want to hear from you about these issues and others that are important to working people in our district. Please feel free to reach out to our offices with any suggestions, comments, ideas, or concerns you have.
