Law Enforcement and Border Security

During his time in Congress, Jared has consistently voted, often against his own party, to strengthen border security and to provide more resources for the men and women in uniform that keep our country and our communities safe.

Recognizing the unique challenges of hiring and retaining immigration and border enforcement personnel in places like northern Maine, Jared introduced the bipartisanDHS Rural and Remote Hiring and Retention Strategy Act of 2023, a bill to make sure that the federal government is addressing Customs and Border Protection recruitment challenges in rural areas. Jared voted to substantially increase funding for local law enforcement and border patrol officers as part of last year’s omnibus government funding bill. The bill was passed by the House and signed into law by the president. In 2021, Jared voted to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, which included significant funding for border stations across the country, including five land ports of entry in Maine’s Second District.

Jared has also voted again and again, often against his party, to substantially increase funding for local law enforcement and border patrol officers. In September 2022, the House passed the bipartisan Invest to Protect Act, which Jared cosponsored, providing $300 million in additional funding to small police departments. He has also been closely tracking the shortage of law enforcement and border officers in Maine.
