Golden announces more than $7.5 million for Presque Isle and Eastport airports

February 14, 2024

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that two rural Maine airports, in Eastport and Presque Isle, will receive more than $7.5 million dollars for major infrastructure improvements, funded by a provision in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021.

“I am proud to see the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law directly benefiting rural Mainers and revitalizing the airports in Presque Isle and Eastport,” Golden said.

The Presque Isle International Airport will receive $6.5 million dollars for the initial stages of a new terminal, including the superstructure and building enclosure. This airport, first utilized in 1933, served as an air base for planes bound to and from Great Britain during World War II. Now, it continues to serve thousands of passengers as a commercial airport.

The Eastport Municipal Airport (EPM) will receive $1.1 million dollars to help construct a new terminal to replace the former one, which was removed in 2018. EPM has played a large role in Maine military history since it was founded in 1942, including use by the Civil Air Patrol for anti-submarine patrol operations. The airport currently supports only private use, but airport leaders are exploring opportunities to bring passenger and freight flights to Eastport.

Since passage, Maine's Second Congressional District has received nearly $50 million in airport infrastructure funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
