Golden, Bipartisan Colleagues Urge Further Action to Support Ukraine

April 5, 2022

WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of seven Democrats and 10 Republicans are calling on the Biden Administration to increase and expedite the transfer of defense equipment to Ukraine. In a letter to President Biden, the lawmakers called on the administration to help finalize the transfer of the S-300 surface-to-air missile system, provide increased radar capabilities to protect Ukrainian air space, and help supply anti-ship missiles to defend the Ukrainian coastline.

"As Ukraine continues to defend its nation from Russia's unprovoked invasion, the U.S. and our allies must provide further support and assistance to ensure that the Ukrainian armed forces can protect innocent civilians and uphold the sovereignty of their nation…As we have seen with the devastation inflicted by Russian forces on the port city of Mariupol, however, it is critical that we do more to protect Ukraine and its people from Russia's indiscriminate attacks," the lawmakers wrote. "...We firmly believe these actions are not only in the interest of Ukraine and its people, but also in the interest of U.S. national security and the security of our NATO and European allies."

The letter was led by Representatives Jared Golden (D-Maine), Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.), and Jim Baird (R-Ind.), and was signed by Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), Chris Pappas (D-N.H.), John Katko (R-N.Y.), Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), Conor Lamb (D-Pa.), Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa), Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.), Jake Ellzey (R-Texas), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Peter Meijer (R-Mich.), and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas).
