Golden secures $1 million for wastewater improvements in Lubec
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that he has secured $1 million in dedicated funding for the Lubec Wastewater Project.
The funding was included in the partial 2024 appropriations package signed into law on Saturday. It will be used to upgrade four wastewater pumping stations and parts of the municipal wastewater treatment plant in order to meet discharge licensing requirements.
“When wastewater infrastructure starts to fail, it puts the health of the entire community at risk,” saidGolden. “The improvements that will be funded by this appropriation have been sorely needed, and I’m proud to have partnered with the Town of Lubec to make sure this critical infrastructure is up-to-date.”
“The Town of Lubec would like to thank Congressman Golden for all the hard work required to provide much-needed funding for our wastewater treatment plant upgrade,” said Lubec Town Administrator Suzette Francis. “The existing facility is more than 30 years old and much of the equipment is beyond the expected useful life of 20 years. The facility requires significant updates to continue to function properly. Given the rising cost of construction, without this funding the town could not afford to pay for the project, which is essential to protect our regional water quality essential to the fishing and ecotourism economy.”
The funding for Lubec will pay for upgrades needed to keep the town compliant with its discharge license. With some equipment having already failed, requiring emergency repairs, this funding will allow the town to get ahead of future failures before they can occur. The four pump stations will get upgraded pumps, as well as new control panels, telemetry and rail retrieval systems. The wastewater treatment plant will receive many improvements, including new influent samplers, properly ventilated headwork vaults and a new chlorination pump to continue pre-chlorinating the raw sewage for odor control.
The request on behalf of the Town of Lubec was one of 15 awards from Golden’s Community Project Funding (CPF) requests approved as part of the appropriations package. His $26 million in successful CPF requests was the most of any Democrat in Congress.
