Golden secures $1 million to replace Burroughs Road bridge in Lisbon
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that he has secured $1 million in funding to replace the Burroughs Road Potter Brook bridge.
The funding is part of the partial 2024 government funding package signed into law on Saturday.
A recent inspection done by the Maine Department of Transportation determined the bridge needs to be replaced due to its poor condition. Many Lisbon and Bowdoin residents rely on the bridge because it serves as the only access road for those living on Burroughs Road.
“There are more than 50 homes whose only route to the outside world is the failing Burroughs Road bridge in Lisbon,” saidGolden. “It’s imperative that this access remains safe and open, and I’m proud to partner with the Town of Lisbon and deliver the funds needed to fix it.”
“We warmly welcome the enactment of the earmark funding for the essential repair of the bridge that serves as the sole means of egress for the residents of Lisbon and Bowdoin on West Burrough Road,” said Glenn Michalowski, Town Manager of Lisbon. “This vital artery, compromised during the storm of May 2nd, 2023, is crucial not only for the daily commute but as a critical pathway for emergency services, fuel deliveries, and school bus routes. The approval of this earmark underscores a significant commitment to the safety and well-being of our joint communities, ensuring that this route is restored to its full functionality. For our local taxpayers, this investment signifies a dedication to maintaining the lifelines of our community, promising enhanced safety and reliability. We are eager to commence the repair works and are committed to swiftly restoring this essential link to serve our residents.”
The new bridge will also feature a wider stream opening to assist fish passage — including for the vulnerable Atlantic salmon — in accordance with Department of Environmental Protection goals.
The request on behalf of the Town of Lisbon was one of 15 awards from Golden’s Community Project Funding (CPF) requests approved as part of the appropriations package. His $26 million in successful CPF requests was the most of any Democrat in Congress.
