Golden secures $1.5 million for wastewater upgrades in Winterport
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that he has secured $1.5 million in funding for upgrades to the Winterport Water District’s wastewater treatment plant.
The funding is part of the partial 2024 government funding package signed into law Saturday and will be used to complete mandatory upgrades to the treatment plant.
“There’s a demonstrable financial, human health, and environmental need to overhaul Winterport’s wastewater system,” saidGolden. “I’m proud to partner with the town to get this important project across the finish line.”
“On behalf of the Winterport Water District, we are extremely pleased that this funding is going to be available for the upgrade to the District’s primary treatment facility,” said Annaleis Hafford, Winterport Water District Manager. “The District wants to express its sincere gratitude to Rep. Golden, the Town of Winterport, and everyone else who has helped spearhead the upgrade of the plant to secondary treatment. This funding opportunity is key to helping the District get one step closer to moving forward on the implementation of this very necessary project.”
This funding will allow the wastewater treatment facility in Winterport to continue safely discharging safe effluent into the Penobscot River. The Penobscot River is an invaluable resource due to its support of Maine's Atlantic salmon habitat, recreation, and tourism. Upgrading this facility will help protect the Penobscot River, relieve the burden on the ratepayers, and retain borrowing capacity to address other infrastructure needs in Winterport.
The request on behalf of the Town of Winterport was one of 15 awards from Golden’s Community Project Funding (CPF) requests approved as part of the appropriations package. His $26 million in successful CPF requests was the most of any Democrat in Congress.
