Golden Secures $1.6 Million for Auburn-Lewiston Airport Expansion
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that he has secured $1.6 million in dedicated funding as part of the 2023 appropriations government funding package for the Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport. The funding, which passed the Senate yesterday and is expected to head to the president’s desk for his signature this week, will go towards construction of a new airplane hangar at the airport.
“The Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport is an economic pillar for the entire region. Investing in the airport’s growth and success benefits businesses and local economies all over Lewiston-Auburn and Androscoggin County, and could set the stage for passenger service down the road” said Rep. Golden. “I was lucky to have a great partner in this request in Mayor Jason Levesque and I’m glad we were able to deliver.”
“I’m extremely thankful for Representative Golden’s advocacy for the Auburn Airport, and the incredible economic impact this project will have for the entire region,” said Auburn Mayor Jason Levesque. “This type of transportation infrastructure investment will have an immediate and quantifiable impact on thousands of our residents and businesses.”
Opened in 1935, the Auburn-Lewiston Airport has been a hub for charter airlines for nearly a century. Construction of a new hangar would allow for bigger, company flights to land at the airport, boosting the local and regional economy.
The request on behalf of the City of Auburn was one of the congressman’sCommunity Project Funding requests. Congressman Golden was the only member of the delegation whose request for funding was included in the year-end omnibus spending bill.
Golden met with local leaders and toured the proposed site for the hangar in July.
