Golden Secures Funding for East Millinocket Ambulances

March 10, 2022

WASHINGTON — In an important development for the Katahdin region, Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) announced today that he has secured $300,000 in dedicated funding for two new four-wheel drive ambulances for the East Millinocket Fire Department. The East Millinocket Fire Department is responsible for responding to paramedic emergencies across more than 515 square miles. Many remote locations in this service area can only be reached by unpaved roads or in snowy weather conditions, which can significantly delay access by standard street ambulances.

"I'm proud to deliver this funding for the East Millinocket Fire Department to acquire four-wheel drive ambulances and help paramedics reach patients quickly when it matters most. With heavy snow and miles of unpaved mountain roads, the Katahdin region presents significant challenges for first responders in conventional two-wheel-drive ambulances," said Golden. "This funding will help the Department respond swiftly to emergencies across their remote service area, and free up resources for the Department to recruit and retain its dedicated professionals."

"East Millinocket provides primary paramedic coverage for approximately 792 square miles in Southern Aroostook and Northern Penobscot Counties. We cover many communities, but we have the unique situation of often having more trained and skilled staff than we do vehicles that can handle the rough terrain in our part of the state. This funding that Congressman Golden secured for new ambulances is crucial to our ability to provide emergency services quickly and affordably in the Katahdin Region and beyond." - Mike Michaud, Chair, East Millinocket Board of Selectmen

The request on behalf of the East Millinocket Fire Department was one of the congressman'sCommunity Project Funding requests. The House passed the bill containing Golden's request late last night. The legislation is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law without delay.

The Katahdin region is home to busy logging operations and is a growing destination for snowmobiling and other forms of outdoor recreation. By ensuring robust emergency coverage in the remote woods, this funding will help protect year-round residents, workers, and visitors.
