Golden statement on 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) released the following statement today on the 51st anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision:
“Roe v. Wade established the important precedent that women deserve the freedom to make their own health care decisions, and that precedent rightfully stood for decades,”Golden said. “The overturning of Roe took away that freedom from women all over the country. Congress has a responsibility to restore it.”
Golden has been a strong advocate for women's reproductive health care throughout his time in public office. In 2022, Golden called the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling that overturned decades of settled law a “grave mistake,” and said that Congress should codify the Roe and Casey v. Planned Parenthood frameworks into federal statute.
He has repeatedly voted for the Women's Health Protection Act, which would enshrine abortion rights for patients and providers and create federal protection against medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion. He also supported the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act in 2022, which would prohibit restrictions on traveling out-of-state to receive an abortion or ordering drugs approved for terminating a pregnancy through the mail.
Last week, he voted against two bills — H.R. 6914 and H.R. 6918 — that would have undermined women’s reproductive freedom by mandating what information schools should provide to pregnant students and allowing federal funding to be diverted to unregulated, unlicensed, anti-abortion counseling centers.
