Golden statement on Mayorkas impeachment
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) voted again today to oppose the House GOP’s impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Today was the second attempt by House Republicans to impeach Mayorkas, after failing an initial vote last week.
The Congressman released the following statement:
“There have always been tensions and disagreements between the coequal branches of government, but the Founders and prior Congresses have understood that there is a higher bar for impeachment than those disagreements alone,” Golden said. “Today’s impeachment sets a dangerous precedent. This is the first time in our nation’s history that a Cabinet official has been impeached on such shallow grounds, for such obviously cynical and political purposes. We should pray that future Congresses don’t follow this poor example.”
