Golden statement on the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade

January 22, 2026

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) today released the following statement on the 53rd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s historic Roe v. Wade decision:

“Every American deserves the freedom to choose how and when to start a family, but that right was stolen from countless women when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade,” Golden said. Roe was a landmark decision with a strong constitutional basis that afforded women the basic right to autonomy over their own bodies. The loss of reproductive freedom put American lives at risk, and I will keep working to restore these rights to every woman in the United States.”

Golden believes the decision to start a family should remain a private matter between women and their doctors. Since he was elected to office, Golden has supported reproductive health care and worked to codify the abortion rights that Roe protected. He also has voted in favor of prohibiting restrictions on traveling out-of-state to receive an abortion and ordering drugs approved for terminating a pregnancy.

Golden is an original cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2025, which would codify the Roe decision by confirming an individual’s right to terminate or continue a pregnancy. For women who choose to start a family, Golden last year introduced the Supporting Healthy Moms and Babies Act, which would require private health insurance companies to fully cover the costs of childbirth and related maternity care.

After Dobbs v. Jackson overturned Roe in 2022, Golden spoke in firm opposition to the decision, calling it a grave mistake.”
