WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) released the following statement after voting Wednesday for a resolution urging the President Joe Biden’s administration to take action to address the immigration crisis at the southern border:
“Most of us understand that nations need borders, those borders should be secured, and we should enforce the immigration laws on the books. Most of us also understand that those seeking entry to our country deserve an orderly and predictable immigration process. Right now we have problems on both fronts,” Golden said.
“Illegal immigration threatens our national security and undermines American jobs. It’s time for Congress and the Biden administration to come together and pass legislation to meaningfully address issues at the border. It should be a top priority in Washington, just like it is in most of America.”
Golden has voted consistently, often against his own party, in support of legislation supporting the immigration enforcement and border patrol efforts to ensure the federal government is not hindered in its effort to address the influx in migration at the southern border. He has voted for roughly $100 billion in border security funding, including more than $78 billion for US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Golden has introduced and voted for several pieces of legislation to secure the border and keep the immigration process safe for all those involved. That includes:
- a bipartisan bill to give the Biden administration authority to expel migrants who enter the country illegally, while protecting those whose expulsion would expose them to risk of persecution or torture;
- a vote to substantially increase funding for local law enforcement and border patrol officers as part of 2022’s omnibus government funding bill; and
- a vote to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, which included significant funding for border stations across the country, including five land ports of entry in Maine’s Second District.
Golden is also a member of the Bipartisan Drug Cartel Task Force, which works to create policies that will prevent drug cartel operations from crossing southern borders and keep United States communities safe from crime, fentanyl and other drugs. He cosponsored a resolution to authorize the use of military force against cartel leaders.
Today’s resolution passed 225-187.
