Golden Votes Against New Committee that Could Allow Congressional Interference in Federal Law Enforcement Investigations

January 11, 2023

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) released a statement today following his vote last night against legislation allowing for the establishment of a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.

The subcommittee, which would have subpoena power, would focus on investigating law enforcement agencies, including federal agencies like the FBI and investigations the agency is carrying out. Importantly, members of the committee under federal investigation themselves would not be forced to recuse themselves from committee proceedings.

“We should not grant lawmakers the authority to undermine the work of law enforcement officials, let alone insert themselves into ongoing investigations focused on their own activity,” said Congressman Golden. “This committee opens the door to corruption and abuse of power and flies in the face of the separation of powers as it is enshrined in the Constitution.”
