WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) released the following statement after voting for passage of a continuing resolution to keep the federal government open through March:
“With a needless government shutdown averted, it’s time for Congress to stop the delays and get to work on a bipartisan budget,” said Golden. “We need to leave budget gimmicks behind and focus on fiscal responsibility: One easy step I will prioritize is cutting unspent COVID funds to help reduce the deficit. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get the budget over the finish line.”
Golden has been a leading voice on reducing brinkmanship in the budget process throughout his time in Congress. His plan to avoid an initial government shutdown in September garnered the support of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, which is composed of 32 Democrats and 32 Republicans.
Golden has also pressed both parties on the need for fiscal responsibility and reducing the national debt. In April, during negotiations over the debt ceiling, he released a framework for balancing the federal budget that was widely praised by local and national news outlets. He also co-leads two bills — the Fiscal Commission Act of 2023 and the Debt-to-GDP Transparency and Stabilization Act— which each passed the House Budget Committee today.
Today’s continuing resolution extends the deadlines to pass a year-long budget to March 1 and 8, respectively. It passed the house 314-108.
