Upset by what he saw as "a cynical move" by congressional leaders, Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden protested their decision to tie several bipartisan measures aimed at lowering prescription drug prices to proposals to strengthen the Affordable Care Act.

Though the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives approved the package, the Lewiston legislator said including the ACA provisions killed an opportunity to give the Republican-controlled Senate legislation it might approve.

Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) pushed Congressional leaders in the House to take steps that would bring back local news access for many residents of Aroostook County. In a letter to the House Energy and Commerce and Judiciary Committees, Golden encouraged committee leadership to allow the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act Reauthorization Act of 2014 (STELAR) to sunset, as intended.

BETHEL — The majority of Telstar's Freshman Class traveled to Washington D.C. at the end of March.

Students stayed at a National 4-H Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Md. The center was formerly a women's college.

The trip was connected to the current units students are studying, including astronomy, social studies and art. They visited the Air and Space Museum, the Supreme Court, the U.S. Capitol and the Renwick Gallery, which is a section of the Smithsonian Art Museum.

The American Loggers Council (ALC) today applauded the introduction of the bipartisan Safe Routes Act of 2019 (H.R. 2453) allowing log trucks to utilize federal interstates for short-haul trips. The legislation was announced today by U.S. Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI); other original sponsors include U.S. Representatives Sanford Bishop (D-GA), Joe Courtney (D-CT), Jared Golden (D-ME) and Jim Sensebrenner (R-WI).

The top marine resources officials from Maine and New Hampshire, joined by Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden of Maine's 2nd District, are sharply criticizing the federal government's efforts to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale and are calling for a slowdown of plans to impose new rules that could be costly for New England's lobster fleet.

AUGUSTA — Veterans and legislators broke ground Thursday on the future site of Maine Veterans' Homes' Augusta campus, celebrating a residential care facility that they said will feel more like home and less like an institution.

"It's looks like it'll be a great home," said Commander Roger Emmons, of VFW District 8, which encompasses five Kennebec County Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, including Augusta's. "It's something we need. Something that's 50 or 60 years old kind of wears out."

BATH — Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer praised the workforce development training taking place in Bath to prepare workers for careers at Bath Iron Works during an Armed Service Committee hearing last week.

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, asked Navy officials to explain what they were doing to ensure that there would be people willing and able to work in careers in the nation's shipyards, especially since many of those careers require special skills. While Spencer noted efforts were taking place across the county, he specified the work going on in Maine to make his point.

Only two Democrats in the U.S. House have voted with President Donald Trump more than Golden, according to statistics compiled by FiveThirtyEight, a polling and data-driven news outfit.

MADAWASKA, Maine — Maine's two U.S. House members are pushing federal officials to approve the state's application for a $36 million grant to help pay for a new international bridge at Madawaska.

In a letter to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao dated March 18, Reps. Jared Golden and Chellie Pingree express their "strong support" for the Maine Department of Transportation's request for funding.
