WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) cosponsored the Tax Fairness for Workers Act this week to provide tax relief to Maine workers. The bipartisan legislation makes an important change to the 2017 tax bill, restoring the ability of American workers to deduct their union dues, as well as unreimbursed work expenses, from their federal taxes.

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) helped pass legislation today to confront climate change and maintain American leadership on the international stage. Golden voted to pass the Climate Action Now Act, a bill that would block the removal of the United States from the Paris Agreement and direct the administration to create a plan to meet the pollution reduction goals included in the agreement.

The American Loggers Council (ALC) today applauded the introduction of the bipartisan Safe Routes Act of 2019 (H.R. 2453) allowing log trucks to utilize federal interstates for short-haul trips. The legislation was announced today by U.S. Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI); other original sponsors include U.S. Representatives Sanford Bishop (D-GA), Joe Courtney (D-CT), Jared Golden (D-ME) and Jim Sensebrenner (R-WI).

LEWISTON — Congressman Jared Golden (ME-02) raised serious concerns today about the potential harm inflicted on Maine lobstermen from new regulations proposed by the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Team (TRT) intended to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whale. Taking issue with the tool being used to determine the health of the right whale population, Golden urged leaders at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to reevaluate their approach and delay its rulemaking.

AUGUSTA — Veterans and legislators broke ground Thursday on the future site of Maine Veterans' Homes' Augusta campus, celebrating a residential care facility that they said will feel more like home and less like an institution.

"It's looks like it'll be a great home," said Commander Roger Emmons, of VFW District 8, which encompasses five Kennebec County Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, including Augusta's. "It's something we need. Something that's 50 or 60 years old kind of wears out."

BATH — Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer praised the workforce development training taking place in Bath to prepare workers for careers at Bath Iron Works during an Armed Service Committee hearing last week.

U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, asked Navy officials to explain what they were doing to ensure that there would be people willing and able to work in careers in the nation's shipyards, especially since many of those careers require special skills. While Spencer noted efforts were taking place across the county, he specified the work going on in Maine to make his point.
